Tackle Your Feelings Indigenous Community Lead

An important initiative of the AFL Coaches Association, AFL Players’ Association and Zurich Insurance  is the Tackle Your Feelings (TYF) Program, a mental health training program for community football clubs.

A strength of our program is its ability to use football as the vehicle to have conversations about social and emotional wellbeing, and given the significant role football plays in Australian Indigenous communities, we believe this will help us ensure TYF is a valued community program for all Australians, including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

To achieve this, we are recruiting for a part-time Indigenous Community Lead to support the adaptation of the program to ensure it is safe, effective and culturally appropriate for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander participants.

Role Responsibilities

A key element of this role is to build trust within five Indigenous communities across Australia so that the Tackle Your Feelings Program is welcomed by community leaders.

  • Participate in the Working Group responsible for this aspect of the program
  • Build relationships with five Indigenous communities across Australia that fit the criteria identified by the TYF Working Group
  • Work with the wider TYF team and Indigenous communities to embed an adapted version of the Tackle Your Feelings program
  • Identify ways the TYF Program can achieve desired mental health outcomes with Indigenous communities
  • Build outreach capacity to the five identified communities and strengthen relationships with the community to increase awareness of the TYF Program
  • Provide guidance to support the TYF team to expand their understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
  • Work with the community to determine what post program support would be beneficial and recommend how this support can be provided
